Link school Swallow's

Link school Art workshops - A Swallow's Journey

Initial work had been done with students in Hermitage Primary School, Qacha’s Nek during November 2013 to begin a literacy and art international collaborative project. “A Swallow’s Journey” begun with Grade 5, devising group stories about the cold little swallows of Qacha’s Nek needing to leave for the Winter.

Grade 4 then continued the story as the groups of Swallow’s split from each other and got lost in the Mountains of the Drakensburg, South Africa. As they were reunited they flew on toward Botswana.

Deep in the jungles of Botswana, a small group of Class 6 Swallow’s got into trouble as the “naughty little Swallow” accidently flew into the mouth of a yawning Hippopotamus. Teamwork and creative thinking got him out so they could join the others on their journey North.

In January 2014 my Lesotho-Wales link project begun in Wales, beginning with Hermitage’s link school, Allensbank Primary in Cardiff. Year 4 wrote some exciting adventure stories as the Swallow’s winged their way across the Sahara desert.

Pembrey Primary School, linked to Moyeni Primary in Quthing continued the work as the Swallows flew over and into the rainforests of the Congo.

Henllys Primary School spent a full day making work based on the Swallow’s progress across the desert and mountains of Morocco.

Most Holy Redeemer Primary School in Qacha’s Nek will take part during May 2014 and share their story ideas as the Swallow’s embark across Europe, starting with Spain and France.

Moyeni Primary School will take on the last leg of the journey as they see the White Cliffs of Dover and the Severn Bridge.

Lesaone Primary School, Leribe

During the Lesotho Literacy Leap project I visited some of the teachers I met in Wales during their visit in July 2013. I started with Lesaone Primary School in Leribe, linked with …………..Primary School.

I ran a mini-workshop with the Grade 1,2 3 teachers and visited each class, even the classes in the storerooms!!

Kingsgate Primary School visit, Mafeteng

I visited Kingsgate Primary School in Mafeteng during their graduation ceremony for their Reception class. They looked so cute in their mortar boards and gowns, not that they understood why they were dressed up or having to sit for hours!!! After leaving a pack of resources with the teachers I promised to return and run a workshop for their cluster schools in 2014.

Allensbank Primary School's Lestho Link

Lesotho Link

Allensbank has recently begun its link with Hermitage in Qacha’s Nek in Southern Lesotho. We had a great surprise when some letters were brought to us from grade 6. All the pupils were all really excited to get the letters. Each letter had a photograph of the writer on them, the pupils loved knowing what their new pen pal looked like.

Everyone chose the letter they wanted based on the likes and dislikes of the author, they were read  and then write a reply. Four months later, replies were received, the pupils were really excited to have a letter written personally to them!

Sharon, who taught in Hermitage, came in to share many photographs and answer lots of questions that all the pupils had. In Hermitage, they stared the Swallow project. This is the project that Sharon started, showing a link between Lesotho and Wales. In our Summer months, a swallow’s home is in Wales and in our winter months, the swallow’s home is in Lesotho. Sharon came in to carry out the swallow project. The results were fantastic! We have now displayed the artwork to remind us all of our link with Hermitage in Lesotho.

Allensbank has been learning all about Lesotho and its link with Wales for 4 years. Many pupils have and great experiences and loved learning all about this contrasting country. They have learnt through class activities such as making Basotho skirts out of bottle tops and plastic makes, modelling  Basotho huts and even trying some traditional Basotho food. We have also been lucky to have visits from Basothos, have a  Lesotho club and we even carried out an assembly to celebrate Moshoeshoe’s Day.
